Why Does My Cat Spray?

Some cats spray or mark territory inside your home by raising their tails and squirting a small amount of urine on the walls or furniture. Although not an abnormal cat behavior, it is one you would appreciate if he did not do. Sprayed cat urine contains pheromones, a substance that animals use to communicate.

Cats mark because they’re excited - either positively or negatively. A cat may be defining its territory, demonstrating dominance to other cats, initiating sexual activity, or reacting to changes in the environment.

Although neutering a kitten may remove this behavior, it is not a guarantee. Male and female; neutered or not, cats may spray. If neutering does not solve your problem, your vet can recommend medications that have been shown effective.

The most common treatment for urine spraying and marking in cats has been administration of long-acting progestins. However, recent recommendations for treatment with diazepam have gained favor because of reported adverse effects of progestins.
