While You Are Away - Creating A Good Cat Environment
Working parents need to leave the kitties home alone sometimes. So, how can you create an environment that will make your cat happy and secure in your absence? Cats, especially indoor cats, need stimulation and recreation to maintain their good mental health. It is important that your cat have toys, places to hide, sleep, things to scratch, and things to watch.
If your cat lives with dogs or another cat, they will naturally have stimulating interactions and that is good. But, your cat should also have a get-away place where he or she feels safe. You can create his safe hiding place using a box or paper bag or just by putting a towel on top of the dresser and TV.
Cats like high places where they can observe what’s going on. Having a safe, personal place is especially important for kitty’s food and litter box. Even though your cat may think watching you in the bathroom or eating is fun, he usually does not feel the same when he is eating or eliminating.
A cat scratching post with a perch is an excellent, all purpose cat environmental enhancement since it offers both an exercise opportunity and an observation deck.
If you will be away during regular feeding time, you can use an automatic cat feeding station such as the "Six Days" automatic feeding system available from Koolatron.
To use the automatic feeder you place the exact amount of food you want to feed your pet in each of the six chambers. Then set the timer to activate in 6, 12 or 24 hours, giving you the option to feed anywhere from four meals a day over a 96-hour period.
