Trimming Your Cat’s Nails
House cats may need to have their claws trimmed. Although this will probably not be fun for you or the cat, it is something that should be done. You can purchase special clippers at your pet store. Using special cat claw trimmers ensures that they are sharp and the correct size and strength.
To clip the claws, first make the cat secure either by holding or wrapping in a towel. Then press gently but firmly on the pad area to extend a claw. Examine the claw closely to find the quick (a pink area in the center). Holding the clippers parallel to the flat part of the claw, quickly snip off the tip, being careful not to cut into the quick. Be sure to reward your cat for cooperating!
A couple of helpful hints: Get your kitten accustomed to having his paws touched before you ever try clipping the nails. Wait until your cat is very relaxed before beginning clipping. You may only be able to clip a couple toes at a time - do NOT pressure the cat to stay if he is agitated or angry. Get a spouse or neighbor to help in the holding or clipping. As a last resort, there are cat groomers in most areas. You can decide if the trip to the groomer is more stressful for your pet than having you be the claw-cutting person.
