So, you want to get a kitten?
There are so many cute kittens that need a good home; it is hard to look the other way and do nothing. After you have made the big decision to add a new pet to your household, Iams’ website has valuable suggestions on how to make the little one secure and happy from his first moments in your house.
First, you need to prepare for the kitten’s arrival. He needs a comfortable and secure sleeping area. A carrier or box with a soft towel or cushion will work well for a little kitten. He needs his own bowl and litter box. It is also a good idea to get your kitten his own scratching post and toys.
For the first couple days, keep kitten in his own room away from other pets and small children. You should spend quality time with your kitten every couple hours - petting and talking to him. It is not uncommon for a kitten to be afraid and feel insecure away from his previous family.
Gradually introduce the kitten to your other pets. They will be aware that the kitten is there because of his scent. The first experience of the kitten and other pets should be visual only. Later they can get closer. It is important that you supervise these initial contacts and provide reassurance to both the kitten and to your other pets. Instruct young children on the proper way to pet and hold the kitten.
It won’t be long before your kitten will be fully integrated into the household - ready to be a benevolent king among his subjects.
