Sick Or In Heat?
Karen’s Question:
I have had a cat for 10 years, and since she has been in heat she has become very aggressive with my dog who has lived with us the last 7 years. This has never happened before. I am not sure if she is sick or is it because she’s in heat. Any thoughts?
Barbara’s Answer:
It is normal for a cat in heat to become more aggressive even toward other family pets with which she has previously gotten along fine. The only way your cat can be calmed is either to mate or wait until she goes out of season. The best way to avoid the problem and have peace return to your home is to have your female cat spayed.
Spayed cats won’t come into heat. If you are not sure if the problem is being caused by estrus, you should have her checked by the vet. A sick cat or one that is in pain may also act more aggressively.
Other than spaying, your only option is to separate the animals until your cat’s natural cycle has ended.
