Proper Nutrition For Your Cat
Your cat’s nutrition is an important part of their overall health. By keeping them on a balanced diet, you can extend their lives and keep them healthier and happier. New research is providing insight into cat nutrition, particularly when it comes to dry foods. Here are some tips on how to keep your cat eating the right kinds of food to maintain their weight and their health.
Dry cat foods are usually high in grain, something that a carnivorous cat really doesn’t need. While many people have switched their cats to raw food diets in response, this can also pose risks both to the cats and their owners. Cats are suspectible to salmonella, and this can commonly be found in uncooked meats. To avoid this risk, look for cat foods that contain more meat than grain, or looked for canned foods that are more balanced.
If your cat does not tend to overeat, you should provide them with access to their food throughout the day. This is more difficult if you are feeding canned food. If you can’t leave food down all day, try to give your cat small, frequent meals every few hours. This will fit their natural needs more closely than feeding them once a day.
Cat treats are helpful for training, but it is important to make sure they are actually good for your cat. Read the labels and see what ingredients are included. Many new cat treats on the market provide secondary benefits, such as control for hairballs or extra vitamins. Keep tabs on how many treats you give your cat, as they are usually quite fattening.
Vitamins and minerals are very important for your cat’s health. Most commercial cat food does not contain the proper amounts for your cat’s daily health, but you can purchase supplements that will make sure your make does receive the nutrition they need. Most supplements are available in a liquid or treat form that appeal to a cat’s natural tastes, to make them easier to administer.
Fresh greens are important for cats, which is why they may be attacking your houseplants. This behavior can be hazardous, especially since many houseplants can be toxic. Try planting "Kitty Greens," to grow your own cat treats. These greens are usually available in small containers that can be kept either in the kitchen or in an area that your cat can easily access.
Water is an area that many cat owners overlook. Always provide your cat with access to clean and fresh water. If your cat is a dipper, or frequently dips their feet into their water bowl, clean and sterilize this bowl on a regular basis to avoid cross-contamination. While cats don’t need much water every day, the quality of the water they drink is very important.
Lastly, proper exercise is just as important as the type of food you give your cat. Make sure they play at least a few times a day so they will stay fit and healthy. Ingenious toys make this task a little easier and can provide you with some much need fun while you watch them getting their exercise.
