It’s MY Garden
I do not want to seem selfish, but I work very hard to get my vegetable garden in shape and lovingly care for the small starter plants that will provide our summer harvest. So, I get really irritated when a cat (usually mine) decides that the garden is a good place for a cat nap or worse yet - a litter box.
So, here are some tips to keep cats out of your garden.
First, a personal lesson - plant the cat nip somewhere else. You’d think I would have realized that I was attracting the cats when I put one of their favorite herbs in my tea garden. Duh! LOL
Next, cats are afraid of snakes, so sometimes you can fool them by placing a piece of a garden hose strategically.
Then there is the belief that the droppings of large cats like lions and tigers will keep cats away. Believe it or not, if you want to try this one, you may find that your local zoo has a waiting list.
There is also a product called Lion’s Roar that contains pellets soaked in real essence of lion dung available from Sort Out Your Garden in England.
Sometimes noise makers like wind chimes are a cat deterrent. And then there are other folks who have found that citrus peels, cayenne, and chili powder work - at least until it rains.
Some gardeners install motion activated sprinklers. These work well unless you have watering restrictions. I do not think the authorities will buy the cat-did-it story.
Finally, there are some plants that cats do not like and will stay away from such as: rue, pennyroyal, lavender, and coleus canina.
