Fashion And Function - Cat Collars

Cat collars can be a fashion accessory coming in colors, styles, and decorations that accent your cat’s personality. There is almost no limit to the clever ideas that manufacturers have come up with for decorative cat collars. And, cat collars are also functional. For cats that go outdoors, the collar can carry identification and can be used to open cat doors with special magnetic identification systems. So, the first question an owner should ask themselves is: Does my cat need a collar? You can also ask yourself if your cat wants a collar - probably not, though. Cats only tolerate collars rather than desiring the look and feel of something around their necks.

Cat collars can be made of leather, plastic, or cord. Many collars have an optional breakaway feature that protects your cat from being caught on a branch and hurting itself trying to get loose. Instead, the collar simply breaks open and frees the cat when pressure is applied. Cats can and do, of course, lose these collars fairly easily.

Collars should fit well - it goes almost without saying. You should strive for a fit that allows 1-2 fingers underneath. If the collar is too loose, the cat may get its leg through it or slip it off. If it is too tight, you can experience chaffing on his skin or worse. If your cat is still growing, it is very important to check the collar fitting regularly. It is a good idea to get kittens used to wearing collars at an early age.  Items attached to the collar such as tags and bells may be hazardous if, for example, the cat gets a claw stuck in the bell opening. If you wanted a bell because you thought it may serve as an early warning system for birds, observational research has shown some merit to this belief.  But, anecdotal observations also report that some cats, creeping up on a bird, have learned to silence their bells.

If you have decided to get your cat a collar, you can find a large selection at your local pet store.
