Eating Well In The Neighborhood
Everyone is concerned about how the recent pet food recalls could affect their favorite feline. But some cat owners are not concerned because they have been feeding their cats home-made cat food balanced for his or her nutritional needs. Now one of our favorite purveyors of healthy people food is giving us some counsel on feeding our cat and a great recipe.
Sprouts Farmers Market is an Arizona based company with stores in Arizona, California and Texas. Sprout’s specializes in farm fresh produce, purchased from local growers when possible.
Sprouts also offers a large selection of vitamins and supplements, all natural meats, fresh seafood, bins full of bulk foods, an extensive selection of natural and organic grocery items. In their March/April newsletter - available online - Sprouts takes on the challenge of providing a health and sound diet for kitty.
First, they remind us that cats in the wild eat meat, including bones. The article strongly recommends against dry cat food because it does not provide enough moisture, and grain because it is too difficult to digest.
So, what does the specialist they consulted recommend? Raw or cooked chicken, turkey, and beef. You should also include organ meats for the vitamin and mineral content. I don’t know about them, but my pampered pusses also like fish, a lot!
Their recipe for homemade cat food includes: ½ lb chicken, 2 drops olive oil, 1 egg, 1 teaspoon bone meal, ½ teaspoon fish oil, 1 cat multi-vitamin (crushed), and one tablespoon of vegetable baby food.
