Cat Separation Question
Claus asks:
I have a great kitty who is probably about 3 - 4 years old. He adopted us and I couldn’t find anyone in the neighborhood who claimed him. Anyway, I’ve moved twice since he joined us and have to move back to my PA home for the next 9 months. I’m concerned that in PA he is at risk for getting injured by an auto if let out, but he’s definitely an outdoor cat.
Right now, where I live for the summer, he’s happy and safe (away from predators - I’m on an island - and traffic)
I have someone who can come over 1 - 2 times per day and even stay over some nights.
Would it be OK to leave him in her care … alone in my house?
Barbara’s answer.
Your cat is lucky to have found you and what a tough decision you have to make. It is true that a cat that has had the opportunity to be outdoors may find it difficult to adjust to confinement. And it also seems that there are many new hazards for your cat in Pennsylvania. You did not mention how he gets to the outside on the island, especially if you are leaving him "alone in the house"? Or, how much social time your cat seems to need from you now? Both may be factors in his adjustment to this change.
My recommendation would be to try the separation and monitor closely with your friend how your cat is reacting. As long as your cat is safe, you can always change your decision, if staying by himself is not working out. I imagine that the cat will dislike the change and will appear to be missing you. But, you seem to be sure that at least his physical and perhaps some of his socialization needs will be met. Nine months is a long time in a cat’s life, so you might also try finding someone who will keep even closer tabs on him than stopping by every day.
If you decide to try leaving him alone, don’t forget to leave some familiar items around the house for him. Be sure your friend knows how to get medical help, if needed, and has your written authorization to do so. Good luck!
