Cat Hairballs Are Worse Than Just Yucky
Hairballs are messy and are a problem for cat owners. But, they can also be a problem for cats, especially if your cat is not able to purge them.
Hairballs are usually composed of cat hair, saliva, and may contain partially digested food. Cats and kittens groom several times a day. The unfortunate consequence of this grooming is an accumulation of hair in the stomach. This problem may be more pronounced in long haired cats and during the spring and summer.
Dr. Christine Merle, a veterinarian formerly at the University of Illinois, College of Veterinary Medicine in Urbana, says that, "Hairballs do not usually cause blockages in the stomach or intestines, as long as the cat is in good health and is not dehydrated. If the cat is dehydrated, then the contents of the stomach can become dry and form a blockage." Cats with hairballs may be constipated, have a dry cough, or gag after eating.
Several methods for controlling hairballs are available to cat owners. And some of those methods may actually appeal to your cat. One of the most effective ways to limit hairballs is to brush the cat on a regular basis. This will reduce the amount of hair that is swallowed. Then, there are laxative gels, special hairball prevention diets, and natural remedies.
Two popular laxatives are Laxopet from Kyron Labs and Petromalt from St. Jon labs. These are available from most pet stores or from your primary care veterinarian. Another remedy recently developed for hairballs is a hairball diet. This specially formulated food contains certain enzymes that prevent the hair from forming a ball that causes vomiting.
An example of diet based hairball prevention is the Science Diet products for either your mature or your senior cat.
An example of a natural hairball preventive is from Pet’s Alive. Their product, FurBall Dr., has been specifically formulated for cats who suffer from hairballs and contains a combination of selected herbs and homeopathic ingredients including psyllium and aloe.
